When I sat down to write our first monthly news mail a year ago I was looking forward to my first year of growing the business. That at least has been going well. But here we are today, in the midst of a deadly, global pandemic which disproportionately kills our BAME citizens and witnessing an extraordinary, anguished outpouring of pain and protest in the US and the UK, triggered by the appalling killing of George Floyd and decades of continuing systemic racism.

Here at Elemendar a third of us are people of colour and whilst I am not I have seen, called out and campaigned against prejudice and racism throughout my life. I’m from the UK’s Midlands which is a racial and cultural melting pot and when I arrived in London in the late eighties I (accidentally) walked straight into a Brixton riot. I remember the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles in 1992 and the more recent riots in London in 2011 and 2015. So far, nothing has changed; now, it must.

Here and in the US there is a system of racial and economic oppression. Harmful policies and media intentionally perpetuate it to create division. All of us have a responsibility to end this.

Giorgos Georgopoulos – Co Founder and CEO says:

Ever since Elemendar’s beginnings, we knew that tech suffers from an under-representation of women (like our CTO Syra), BAME people (like our tech co-founder Devon) and immigrants (like myself). This start showed that diversity was both possible and a strength in developing good technology. We know that despite maintaining inclusion in our team’s global make-up, gender balance, spanning 3 decades of age, and across educational backgrounds, we’re not perfect. Walking the walk is table stakes when those denied opportunity are also denied a voice. This is us raising our voice for inclusion and against othering and discrimination of any form. We’d like to do more to support however we can, and I pledge to listen to our communities and act.

More women and BAME representation is needed in Cyber security

Elemendar’s Nadia Khan exclusively interviewed U.S National Security expert Ms Algene Sajery. Algene offers advice to women and girls interested in cybersecurity, thoughts on upskilling and unconscious bias, and comments on the close connection between human rights and cyber security. Elemendar partners with Surevine

As the cyber security threat increases, so does the volume of Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI). In order to help organisations manage and control their CTI, Elemendar and Surevine have integrated their solutions to enable organisations to prioritise what really matters, and deal with the threats at machine-speed.

This new integration allows CTI within Threatvine to be parsed and converted from human, unstructured text to machine-readable STIX data. Threatvine Hub community members have always benefited from the powerful effect of human collaboration, but by using AI and machine learning from Elemendar, the information shared can be even more effective. Mapping information shared in Threatvine onto STIX and the MITRE ATT&CK® framework increases the ways the information can be acted on, allowing deeper insights, and through automation it can be acted on more quickly than ever before.
